Colour keys!

So I came up with a colour palette for my film a few weeks ago:

And so I decided to use my old boards and do some quick (20-30 min.) paintings to test out the palette and get a feel for how the backgrounds would come together.

This one's pretty rough and ugly, but it made me realize which brushes I wanted to use and which ones I was going to avoid (standard brush--definitely avoiding).

So I came up with these ones--liking the textured simple look a lot more (though for the final BGs I'll probably go a tad more detailed). Think I'm happy with the colours now.

Time to jump into final backgrounds!

Rough layout work.

All of my layouts are now completed, but I thought I'd post some of the rough work I did before I got that far.

I'll be painting layouts over the holidays--so I should have some to share with you soon!

Finalized character designs.

Finalized Scarecrow and Statue designs.

Of statues and lovestricken scarecrows...

Playing with the statue design in life drawing class. Getting there!

And something I doodled in my sketchbook during psychology class, whilst also very intently paying attention. Yes.

More design/layout/character stuff coming soon! Hadn't had much to post the last couple weeks because we've been concentrating mainly on finalizing our storyboards.

For the birds.

Looking for birds-in-flight references tonight! Found some pretty rad videos, so I'm going to post them here--not just for those few who might be interested in bird/wing/flight studies, but also so that I can find the damn things again.

If anyone else has any helpful videos/photos/drawings of bird wings and flight motion, please do send me a link!

Some initial stuff.

Character concepts.

Let's start making a mess!

Well hello there!

My name is Sarah Anne Davis and I've created this blog to focus on the mad process of my final thesis film "Lovebirds", and the finishing out my fourth year at Sheridan College.

What can you expect from this blog? Well, pretty much everything I come up with along the journey. Creating a film is a lot of work. Creating a film by yourself is quite potentially an excellent way to chip away at a person's sanity, physical health, all the tunnels in the carpals, and who knows, learn something too? That is the hope!--er, the learning, not the slow painful deterioration. I will be posting concept work, character designs, thumbnails, sketches, paintings, story reels, animation tests, you name it. Except don't name it, because that might get complicated, and there's just no time for requests, you silly-billy.

With luck, the artwork you see here will eventually lead to a coherent and hopefully enjoyable animated film, and with a lot more luck (and I assume some measure of skill and dedication) that film will lead to a nice first job in this exciting industry I have chosen to infiltrate.

So take a seat. Relax. Stay tuned, and so forth! Stuff is about to get all real up in here.

Oh, and if you have any interest in finding out who I am (psshh, details), the following might be useful:
